Pop heaven, personal hell
Britney Spears is the poster child for fame in the 21st century.
The 29-year-old is a pop singer who became one of the biggest stars in the world before she was old enough to legally buy a beer only to crash and burn in the most spectacular manner ever seen by someone not named Mel Gibson.
She's rich, famous, beautiful and somewhat talented -- she can dance and at one time possessed a decent set of pipes -- but is the twice-divorced mother of two really happy? Who knows, because none of us know the real person behind the image that has been so meticulously crafted. And she's not saying, certainly not to her fans in Winnipeg, where she is performing Monday night at the MTS Centre.
In a way, you've got to pity Spears, whose life parallels that of another troubled artist: Michael Jackson. Both had domineering parents who pushed their children into performing, both grew up on stage in front of the public, both became huge stars at a young age and both struggled with drugs.
And much like Jackson, there was a time when everything she touched turned to gold, but the shine has worn off Spears thanks to years of headline-grabbing personal mistakes.
Ten years ago a Spears concert tour would have sold out in minutes, but today sales of her North American Femme Fatale tour are less than impressive. Things are so bad in some markets, including Winnipeg, tickets were being offered for half price on Groupon, one of the Internet's most popular "deal of the day" websites.
Her old fans who helped her become one of the most successful female solo artists in history have moved on, and the new crop of teenage female music fans are listening to artists such Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Katy Perry; although the tabloid television shows and newspapers still love Spears unconditionally.
Yes, she's got money, beauty and fame, but she can't do anything, or go anywhere, without being photographed and criticized. The paparazzi chase her around constantly, whether she is browsing in a bookstore or buying a Frappuccino from a coffee shop. There are photos of her doing almost every activity imaginable, from eating at McDonald's to smoking cigarettes to hanging out on the beach. If she picks her nose, you'll see it on TMZ.
At times she appears to hate them, while other times she leads them on wild goose chases. To make matters even more confusing, she started dating one of them.
So how did all this happen, and why do we even care about this seemingly vacuous pop star in the first place?

I cannot believe it’s been so long since we learned that Jamie Lynn got herself pregnant with her first baby when she was still such a young girl herself. In the years since, we’ve seen little Maddie grow up and we’ve followed the ups and downs of JL ‘s relationship with Casey . To be honest, I was under the impression that the couple broke up ages ago … but either they are still very friendly or they are still very much together . While I had my doubts that this young couple were ready for parenthood, it looks like they’ve been doing just fine and their beautiful daughter is the proof. As I understand it, Jamie Lynn has been spending quite a bit of time in Nashville, TN working on a new album. I wish nothing but the best for Jamie Lynn and her family. I’m so glad to see them all doing so well.

Couldn’t agree more Nicole. There is nothing wrong with leading a nice, quiet life in the country. It’s probably much better for her daughter being out of the spotlight rather than papparazzi everywhere. I am sure that he doesn’t have anything to feel bad about because they mutually had sex and conceived a child together. A child which brought love and happiness to them. Having money and fame is not what it is all about.
