Mercy Tiffin honored with OHA safety award

Mercy Tiffin Hospital is the recipient of a 2011 Ohio Hospital Safety Campaign Award for employee safety. The hospital is one of 14 hospitals earning a Top Twenty Percent Award for ranking in the top 20 percent overall. A total of 29 hospitals across the state of Ohio were recognized for employee safety.

"Mercy Tiffin Hospital is dedicated to ensuring our staff is working in a safe environment," said Dale Thornton, president and CEO of Mercy Tiffin Hospital. "There are many safety initiatives and programs available for our employees. We encourage our employees to maintain safe workstations."

For the past 58 years the Ohio Hospital Association Statewide Hospital Safety Campaign has recognized successful hospital safety programs and superior employee safety records. The safety awards program was created in 1953 by Ohio Hospital Association and Industrial Commission of Ohio to promote workplace safety.

Gies nominated for Health Care Worker of the Year

Hospitals across the state gathered to honor 76 health care heroes who were nominated for this year's Albert E. Dyckes Health Care Worker of the Year award, presented by Ohio Hospital Association June 14. Mercy Tiffin Hospital nominated Karen Gies for this award.

"Karen leads quietly through her involvement and knowledge," said Dale Thornton, president and CEO of Mercy Tiffin Hospital. "With a heart filled with compassion, Karen provides leadership to all staff responsible for the care of our oncology patients. She leads by example as patients and their needs come first. "

In the past year, Karen has dedicated her time to creating the Mercy Cancer Center at Tiffin, which opened Jan. 14. Tiffin was lacking a central location encompassing the multiple needs of patients with cancer. Karen knew the cancer patients experience would be enhanced by access to comprehensive treatment programs in one clinical facility.

With her leadership, Mercy Tiffin consolidated all oncology programs into one community cancer center campus by developing and connecting a new medical/oncology infusion clinic to the existing Radiation Therapy Center. Karen had dedicated her time to making this cancer center a reality.

Ohio hospitals were invited to nominate one person for the Health Care Worker of the Year award, created in 1996 to honor a hospital employee who demonstrates leadership, reflects the values and ideals of Ohio's health care facilities, goes above and beyond the call of duty, gives back to the community and has overcome odds to succeed.

Thus, it builds more confidence to every worker to be more vigilant and careful in doing their job. They will all be aware of how their health and safety have been in concerned.

C. Enforcing the use of safety equipment. Safety protective gears must be worn at all times during work: safety glasses for eye protection, hard hats at all times within the confines of the construction area where there is a potential for falling materials or tools, gloves when handling materials, and safety shoes are necessary for protection against foot injuries.

D. Enforcing safety rules and using appropriate discipline. In every workplace, everyone must strictly act in accordance with the procedures and safety rules governing the site. To ensure safety, everyone must be disciplined to follow set of laws. All of those safety rules must be obeyed. Thus, failure in doing so will result to equivalent disciplinary action.

E. Providing on-going safety training. Trainings are very valuable in every workplace. Each worker must know where, what, when and how they will do the job.
