A Day in the Life with the Motorola Xoom: What You can do with an Android Tablet

Want to know what you can do with an Android Honeycomb tablet? I've had the Motorola Xoom Verizon edition with both WiFi and 3G since launch day in February 2011. The Xoom is my personal tablet purchased with my own funds, and not a review unit. Why did I buy it? It was the first Android tablet, and that made it an important device to have around for our site's tablet coverage. And while I love to play games on the iPad 2 and respect the huge assortment of applications available for that platform, its somewhat closed ecosystem made it less than ideal for the things I wanted to do. I also wanted a higher resolution display, Adobe Flash and direct HDMI out. After four months of daily use, I've found the Xoom very capable and Android Honeycomb with the 3.1 update to be fast and stable. Yes, the web browser force closes once a week, but my iPad 2 apps crash once or twice a week too (mostly games). I use the Xoom heavily; enough so that I decided to "upgrade" to the Asus Eee Pad Transformer so I could also use my tablet as a netbook with keyboard, trackpad and extended battery. So what do I do with the Xoom, and what kinds of things can you do with an Android tablet? Breakfast: I work at home, and that means I work at the breakfast table. I use the excellent and highly graphical Pulse news reader to catch up on my RSS feeds and find out what's going on in the world of tech. World and local news are important too, and I use News360, the USA Today app and the New York Times web site in its desktop form with Adobe Flash content (the New York Times Android tablet app is a piece of junk). Our weather can get crazy, so I have the Weatherbug widget on my main homescreen, and I use the companion tablet app to check out the forecast and radar. The Weather Channel Android tablet app is also pretty slick. Once business is out of the way, I hit the tablet Zinio Reader app and enjoy a little leisure reading of magazines in a luscious print-style layout. After I check out Road and Track and Martha Stewart Magazine (so shoot me), I wash the dishes and hit my desk for work. Morning work day: I primarily use a MacBook Pro with a huge monitor for work at my desk. While it's processing RAW image files or churning through some 1080p video for our next video review, I leave it to do its thing, and switch to the Xoom to check out web sites and test new web page layouts.

Google Reader, which is essential to my writing, seemed like an easy switch. But I found that the best web-based or software client alternatives sync with Google Reader. Calendar and Contacts were easily replaced, and there were plenty of options.

Won't ONE RSS reader app work just fine? I've been looking at QML though and it looks like people can churn out garbage apps for MeeGo with very little effort so maybe that part of the market will be served. For the record I WILL buy this phone and I

We cleaned up the PC because our 500GB hard drive was almost full. We got a new 1.5TB EHD (at almost half the cost of the 500GB EHD we bought years ago) and transferred all files we wanted to keep before re-formatting the old harddrive.

I got all my files and downloads transferred over – all photos are secure. Everything was ready. The boyfriend went ahead and cleaned up. The entire process of reformatting and reinstalling the OS was faster than previous times we’ve done it. There was almost no downtime.

Last night I sat in front of the PC and downloaded Google Chrome – my browser of choice. That’s when it hit me – I did not backup my bookmarks. This happened to me before and I was pretty sure I did some backup at some point, didn’t I? I logged on to my Google account but there was nothing in Bookmarks . Seriously?

So I set out to build up my link list but then I figured I’d just as well set them up in Google Reader as most of the sites I want to keep up with are actually blogs. Here’s an old video introducing Google Reader:

I’d never been an RSS reader fan – it took the fun away from blog hopping and I loved doing that. I tried using the RSS reader on the Windows Live Toolbar a long long time ago, but it just wouldn’t stick. It was no fun.

Thanks to this tutorial on I Heart Faces though, I can blog hop with the aid of Reader, without missing out on the personality of the blogs I visit. What’s more, I don’t have to visit each one just to find out which ones are updated, I just hit Next on my Bookmarks bar and I’m on the next unread item on my list! Coolness!

I do receive blog feeds on my email, but sometimes I feel like it just adds clutter to my Inbox. So I might stop subscribing to feeds via email altogether.

How about you, how do you keep up with your favorite blogs?
