Fire destroys Maple Ridge mill warehouses

Emergency crews fought two fires Friday at a large sawmill in the area of ​​Ruskin, of Maple Ridge, east of Vancouver.

The fire broke out at the sawmill in 9414 at Watkins Street around 9 pm PT 288th and quickly destroyed two large metal buildings used to store the shingles and the chemicals used to preserve wood.

About 12 fire trucks from across the region were called to help fight the blaze, but it was difficult for firefighters to get it under control.

Officials say the two buildings were unoccupied when the fire broke out and there are no reports of injuries.

At noon, firefighters allowed the fire to burn, rather than the distribution of chemical hazards in the Fraser River close by flooding it with water.

There was no sprinkler system in the plant, told Maple Ridge Fire Chief Peter Grootendorst.

"Based on the location and provision of water here, it is difficult to have a sprinkler system," said Grootendorst. "They must rely on people to locate the fire, there is no detection in the building."

The warehouse employs over 100 people, but no one works in the building Friday.
