Jeff Korbelik: Nebraska's Helgenberger leaving 'CSI'
In the summer of 2001, I interviewed Nebraska native Marg Helgenberger about her starring role on "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." Only a year in, the drama already was a huge success.
So much so, CBS moved it from Friday to Thursday to challenge NBC, which dominated the night with "Friends," "Will & Grace" and "ER."
"We were absolutely ready for it," Helgenberger said then. "We said, 'Right on, let's take on the Thursday night institution at NBC.'"
Take it on it did.
Today, CBS bills "CSI," which begins its 12th season this fall, as the most-watched TV series in the world.
Helgenberger is one of the reasons why. When the crime procedural started, she and co-star William Petersen gave it star power.
Sadly, Helgenberger, who plays investigator Catherine Willows, announced last week she is leaving the show. All good things must come to an end.
"I was planning on leaving after last season," she told reporters during CBS' fall press tour.
Producers, however, convinced her to come back so they could better script her departure. Plus, veteran TV actor Ted Danson is now onboard, replacing Laurence Fishburne, who left after his contract expired.
"The combination of that info and me having a hard time letting go of this show and this group of people, I said, ‘Yeah, I'm not done playing this character; I'm not done letting go of this group of people," Helgenberger told the Hollywood Reporter.
She is expected to end her run at midseason. "CSI," though, will leave the door open for the 52-year-old Helgenberger.
"People come and go and come back, so hopefully when we say goodbye, that won't be the last time we see her," executive producer Carol Mendelsohn said.

The former soap opera and "Knight Rider" star will appear in multiple episodes of the The CW's new drama "Ringer," according to TVLine, an online entertainment blog. *The biggest buzz to come out of last week's press tour concerned the role Ashton Kutcher will play in "Two and a Half Men." His character on the CBS comedy will be Walden Schmidt, a broken-hearted Internet billionaire. There's been no official word on what will become of Charlie Sheen's character, Charlie Harper, but it sounds as if the series is killing him off.
