Artist's work will draw in the crowds
A TALENTED artist is hoping for a stroke of luck as he sees his work go on display in London.
Chris Dunn, who graduated from Swindon College Of Art in 2008 with a degree in general illustration, has been accepted into the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition.
The 25-year-old, from Calne, has been a member of the Swindon Artists’ Forum for over two years and works part-time in Inkspot Arts And Crafts and spends the rest of his time freelancing in illustration.
In July he was chosen from 700 entries in the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, and will now be one of 68 artists who will exhibit at the Mall Galleries, in London, from September 12 to 18.
The competition is a highly regarded nationwide art competition which has in the past featured many of Chris’ favourite watercolour artists, so he says to be considered good enough to exhibit is a big achievement for him.
“I was astonished when I found out that I had been accepted to have my work displayed,” he said.
“I had no idea, especially as this is the first time I have entered.
“A lot of my favourite artists have been through this competition so it is nice to just be on the same wall as them.
“I knew I had to do something different from just your usual landscape or portrait picture.
“I am always coming up with random ideas and putting them down and I thought it was good to have the bull in the china shop as it is an iconic saying and then I had a lot of symbolism within the piece like the matador on the vase.
“I have always been interested in art and I would love to get into children’s books and publishing but I know how difficult it is.
“With something like this it gets your work out there and people within the industry and like minded people see it, and you never know who might pick out your work.
“I hope my selection will act as a springboard for bigger and better things.”
Chris is hoping his piece, which is valued at £2,000, will be sold at the exhibition.
The results of the competition will be announced before the exhibition then highlights of the 68 are selected for a UK tour.

But now his talisman is a singular failure: his second show, at the Ink Spot in St Kilda, and the attractive barmaid who could not look him in the eye after his act. ''My overwhelming feeling at the end of any of the shows now is never joy,'' he says.
There's stuff like The Ink Spots, Luis Armstrong, Marilyn Monroe, Bob Crosby's Bob Cats, Duke Ellington and The Mills Bothers on those records he'd collected as he went along. My grandparents travelled to various cities including London, Canberra,
Flood Update..... - Flowerbug's Inkspot
As for our flooded home, we have started to gut it. This means we're removing the moldy walls, cabinets, woodwork and muddy carpets. We hesitated to do even this because we live right beside the river and there are plans to widen the dikes. We already lost part of our road with the increased diking and if they do widen the dike system as they plan to, the dike will actually be on top of our house. So we don't expect to ever live there again. The hard part is waiting for our city to announce a concrete plan. What do we do with our home? Fix it or let it go. Then we wonder if we don't fix it and there is a 'buy out' will we get less money for it? I did see the outside for the first time last week and what was left of my beautiful back yard. It's a brown and gray landscape. Very few living plants at all; mostly small weeds. You may not know this, but the reason I use the name 'flowerbug' is not just because I tend to like floral stamps but it is because I was an avid gardener for years. I used to spend hours in my gardens and even traded plants with people all over the U.S. It was so much fun to grow the plants from other states in my garden. I do have to tell you that my gardening phase had passed for the most part since I am now an obsessed stamper! I know I've shown a few pics in the past but I will again now. Please do not be too sad to see these. I am so happy to have these pictures! And I have a fantastic plan - I want to blow up a few of my favorite flower and garden pics and hang them on a wall in whatever new home we end up in. This will bring my flowers and garden back to us.
You are so lucky to have such a dear and wonderful friend. Your garden was so beautiful. I'm sure things will work out for you and you'll have another beautiful house and garden in the future. Thank you for the update. I'm glad you are still able to continue your stamping and posting. Will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
Thank you for sharing with us. And what wonderful friends! We lost our home in a tornado in 2003...my dream house, but soon realized it was just a place to keep our stuff. We moved on and are so thankful that we were not hurt and so thankful for the kindness of our friends. I love your attitude and know that God will bless you many ways.
Also...I used the scrap kit I purchased from you recently in a Scrapbook in a Day workshop last week and it was a great success. Thanks so much for this valuable resource. I will be back for more!
