Chlorine gas leak at Arkansas chicken plant sends dozens of ...
When most people envision injuries that commonly occur in factory settings, they more than likely think of neck and back injuries caused by lifting or pulling, or bodily trauma caused by dangerous machinery. While these are all very common injuries, it is important to note that factory workers in certain industries are also at an increased risk of injuries caused by toxic exposure, meaning the inhalation of dangerous gases/chemicals.
To illustrate, consider an incident that occurred earlier this week at a Tyson Foods chicken processing plant in Springdale, Arkansas.
According to reports, roughly 300 workers had to be evacuated from the plant on Monday when a cloud of potentially lethal chlorine gas was accidentally released. In fact, 173 of these 300 workers had to be taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Currently, nearly 50 workers remain hospitalized as a result of the toxic exposure , while five others are in the intensive care unit.
Tyson officials have since admitted that the release of the chlorine gas was attributable to human error - the accidental mixing of two chemicals. However, they have declined to name which two chemicals were accidently mixed.
Tyson spokesperson Gary Mickelson indicated that while the company does not use chlorine gas in any chicken processing, it does use chlorine as an antimicrobial treating agent in the production process.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, exposure to chlorine gas can result in a variety of adverse medical conditions ranging from irritated lung tissue (coughing) and vomiting to fluid in the lungs or death caused by a narrowing of the upper airway.
