Orange free clinic relocates

Since its debut in 2007, the Orange County Free Clinic has been providing primary medical care and prescription assistance to county residents who have no health insurance.

Patient visits to the clinic have increased from 326 at the end of 2007 to more than 1,750 last year.

This surge in patient numbers took place during clinics held on Tuesday evenings and manned by an all-volunteer pool of doctors, nurses and nonmedical personnel.

All of this was done in limited space provided by the county Health Department.

Now the clinic has moved to a bigger space.

The new home is the Orange Underserved Community Health building at 13296-A James Madison Highway, formerly a physical therapy office.

The Piedmont Regional Dental Clinic, scheduled to open in July, will also be in that building.

"Our new location, plus plans to hire a daytime nurse practitioner, will increase our accessibility, reach a larger number of people in need and provide a better continuity of care for those we serve," Executive Director Dorren Brown said.

With the move, the clinic has positioned itself to expand hours and services, such as daytime hours. The nurse practitioner could be hired by the end of this summer, Brown said.

Meanwhile, the clinic is facing heftier operating costs.

"This is both an exciting and critical time for us," Brown explained. "Higher utility and maintenance costs, rental responsibilities, plus rising costs of medical supplies, equipment and prescriptions could mean double-digit increases to our operational budget within the next year."

It's likely that free clinics across the state will be met with a number of challenges.

"The biggest hurdle is continued pressure to serve more people," said Lou Markwith, executive director of the Virginia Association of Free Clinics Inc. VAFC is the nonprofit membership organization for 59 clinics statewide. "There continues to be a lot more people who need more services than Virginia's health safety net can provide."
