Fairholme Leads US Stock Mutual Fund Outflows In Week
By Murray ColemanU.S. stock mutual funds suffered $204.4 million in net outflows in the week ended Wednesday, says Lipper. That was lower than the previous week’s $1.2 billion of outflows.
But it also marked the seventh down week in the past eight.
For the month, Lipper estimates U.S. stock mutual funds had $5.1 billion in net outflows. The only other negative outflow month came in May ($3.5 billion). The previous four months of the year attracted net inflows.
“We’re seeing a de-acceleration in people pulling their money from U.S. equity (mutual) funds,” Tom Roseen , a senior analyst at Lipper, said in an interview.
Some funds managed to attract more new money in the week. The JPMorgan U.S. Large Cap Core Plus Select ( JLPSX ) was the biggest inflow gather with $353 million net inflows.
The American Century Growth ( TWCGX ) had the second-biggest inflows at $133.3 million.
The biggest outflows came from the Bruce Berkowtiz -led Fairholme Fund ( FAIRX ). It had $134 million in negative flows during the week.
In the previous week, FAIRX had outflows of $265 million, according to Lipper.
The most recent week marked the fund’s 17th straight negative week in a stretch dating back to early March.
For the second-quarter, FAIRX’s preliminary estimates indicate that FAIRX suffered around $3.2 billion in net outflows.
Thew herd gets it wrong, again. Financial services companies, which dominate Fairholme’s portfolio, are the most undervalued and most attractive opportunities in the market. Berkowitz didn’t suddenly get stupid after many years of superb performance. He and other highly successful value investors have steadily added to bank and insurance holding as prices have come down.

The American Century Utilities Investor Class Fund (MUTF: BULIX) is an IRA mutual fund that invests in stocks of companies engaged in the utilities industry. It may appeal to investors looking for income, as well as long-term capital appreciation.
In addition, you can hop on or off at any time just as with any other mutual fund. One could argue that the pioneer in all this was American Century, which launched Zero Coupon bond funds designed to act like zero-coupon Treasuries.
Ultimately, however, this fund has delivered some pretty impressive results. American Century Equity Income currently ranks in the top 2% of all large value funds in the past decade and a half. In that time, it has racked up an annualized 9.3% return,
The fund giant has been fighting a charge made by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority in 2005 that alleged it had mishandled mutual fund commissions. Specifically, FINRA fined American $5 million for the alleged improper funneling of mutual

As our economic outlook continues to be poor and as the stock market is in turmoil, stock investing has become increasingly difficult. Maintaining a solid investment portfolio can be hard work. One alternative to the difficult work of stock selection is to invest in mutual funds. With thousands of mutual funds to choose from, how can you tell which ones are the best?
That's why I have compiled a list of the 7 Best Mutual Funds for 2009. After researching the performance, stability, and income of hundreds of top-rated funds, I found the best mutual funds to invest in for 2009 and beyond.
Income-Dividends One part of my selection process was to find mutual funds with cash flow, either through dividends or bond interest payments (in the form of dividends for mutual funds). This factor is becoming ever more important during a time when stocks continue to decline. Through dividends you can know that you will have an income of the yield percentage.
Future Trends Another selection criteria was to find mutual funds that are going to perform well for years to come. As you will see, I have included a mutual fund that invests in stocks of alternative energy or "green" companies. The whole environmentally-friendly, green movement is just getting started and will be a boon to the economy for the next 10-20 years. One aspect that is somewhat more of a near-term strategy is the gold focused fund because of the predicted rise in the price of gold over the next year or two.
Long-Term Performance The last and most important selection criteria was the long-term performance of the mutual fund. Any one stock or mutual fund can perform well over one or two years by luck, but it takes true skill to manage a portfolio that has good returns over a ten year period. A major failure of many investors that buy mutual funds is that they chase the fund that is currently performing the best or just recently had its best year. If the mutual fund is having an unbelievably great year, then either stay away from it because it's too late or sell it if you own it.
The 7 Best Mutual Funds for 2009:
1. American Century High-Yield Fund (AHYVX)
- With the current state of the economy, your best bet for making money is finding an investment with a stated income (i.e. dividends, bond interest payments). American Century's High Yield Fund has a dividend yield of 9.38%, which is much larger than most high yielding mutual funds or stocks.
