Blueberries rank second only to strawberries as the most popular berry in the United States. The annual consumption rate was 31.4 ounces per person in 2009, and it is rising. Blueberries have only been cultivated since the beginning of the 20th century. Before that people depended on crops harvested from the wild. In 1905, Frederick Coville, a USDA botanist, bought a farm in Greenfield as a summer home. He found that the pastures were full of high and low-bush blueberries, and being a botanist, he selected one of each type with superior berries and crossbred them.

The first hybrid blueberry, released to the public in 1920, was called fittingly "Pioneer" and hundreds of other cultivars have followed. Cultivated highbush blueberries take the strong flavor, cold hardiness, and drought tolerance of the wild low-bush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) and marry it with the larger fruit, higher yields, and height of the wild highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum).
