PISGAH ALABAMA IN THE NEWS 1942

My roots began in Pisgah, Alabama when my Grandfather, Carrel Jackson (Tubb) Hall), moved into the Blow Gourd community from Hollywood in 1912, to live and work for his step brother Doc Shavers. Eventually all of Grandpa’s family, brother and sisters Alice & Dora, and Jim Hall, half brothers and sister Kin and Coon and Ludie Hall, step brothers, Andy, Ben and Frank Shavers moved to the Blow Gourd community and married and raised their families. Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Wade of Selma, Lt. L.F. Turner, John Turner, of Camp Blanding, Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Turner of Florence, Mr. and Mrs. George Turner of Bremen, Georgia, Ensign Thomas Turner were visiting their parents Mr. Mrs. J.T. Turner in Pisgah during Christmas. Lt. J.F. was on his way to Fort Sills, Ok, and Ensign Thomas was on his way to San Francisco, California to report for duty on the USS California. Dr. Floyd Cunningham, Dean of the Geography Department State Teacher College in Florence, gave a lecture on the war and world conditions in the auditorium of Pisgah High School Saturday night. The Cunningham family was guest of the Pisgah Rhododendron Club. Principal J.H. Wheeler, W.D. Arnold and their families gave the Cunningham’s a tour of the Pisgah Gorge. It seems to me that it is poor economy to have to buy canned food from long distances when surpluses of these very vegetables can be grown, canned, and stored at home and it would take no more time to do so than it takes to earn the money at some job or growing cotton to buy them and besides that they would be fresher and better than any you can buy. Harvey W. Owens, age 40, died at home at Pisgah, July 7, 1942, following three days of suffering from blood poisoning, set up after he pull a hair from his nose. Rev. B.G. Sartin preached the funeral at the Friendship Church and burial took place in the Friendship cemetery. He was survived by wife, Irene Owens, daughter, Bernice, sister, Mrs. W.B. Everett of Pisgah, three brothers, Robert of Dutton, Arthur and Dal of Pisgah, parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Owens of Pisgah. Mrs. J.L. Milican died at her home at Pisgah Thursday morning, Aug 6, 1942. The funeral was held at the Pisgah Baptist Church and she was buried in the Pisgah Cemetery. Survivors: husband, daughter, Carrie McAnelley, five grandchildren, four sisters; Mrs. Luther Clark of Pisgah, Mrs. Earl Barnes of Dutton, Mrs. Will Phillips of Harriman, Tennessee, Mrs. Marvin Sartin of Arkansas.
