Slice of Life: Racing through the month of May

Whew. Some pep talk, eh? Ever since my kids were little, the month of May has felt like that. First of all we had the sports. Baseball, softball, soccer or lacrosse. It seems like I had barely emerged from our cozy winter abode when I found myself squinting in the bright sunlight at a calendar now spilling over with outdoor activities. Practice tonight. Game tomorrow night. Bring a treat for the team next Tuesday. Oh, and pictures! Who will organize the pictures? Who will help me carpool? “Not I,” said the parent of the single child, and so I ran. May also is the time for the end of the year (you fill in the blank). Band concert. Choir concert. Awards ceremony. Track and field day. Class picnic. Field trip. Sunday School extravaganza. Dance recital. Over the years our family has run from one thing to another in a daze, daring to hope that -- on any given May evening -- one event would end early and one start late so that we could fit it all in. Some days it would get so crazy that my brain refused to take another step, and I would hide in the closet and take deep breaths until someone yelled my name. Remind relatives of the party date. Confirm the tables and chairs reservation. Meet with the parents of next year’s basketball captains and hand over all the information. Remind your senior about last-minute scholarships. Design and print the party invitations. Send Mother’s Day cards and gifts. Attend the meeting for the all-night graduation party. Buy color coordinated tablecloths and napkins. Confirm college housing and orientation dates. Host the lacrosse pasta dinner. Make the senior poster and get it laminated. Pay for the cap and gown. Finalize the party menu. Make bars and desserts ahead of time and freeze. Organize 300 pictures of the graduate from baby to young adult. Move a winter’s worth of aluminum cans and other junk from the garage to the recycling center. Paint the bathroom. Fix the broken board on the deck. Order the cake. Move the college freshman home from Madison. Clean the garage. Plant half of Bachman’s flower inventory in the yard (and act like you do that every year.) Order balloons. Charge the camera batteries. Make centerpieces for the lacrosse banquet.
