Graham Dawson, Liam Livingstone and Jon Miles will be in the Cumberland team to face Berkshire in the Minor Counties Cricket Association Trophy semi-final tomorrow.
The winners of the 50-overs-a-side game at Falkland will book a final date at the world famous home of cricket.
Barrow CC and Lancashire academy teenage all-rounder Livingstone has played at Lord’s before.
However, for Barrow CC team-mate Dawson, who is based in his hometown Millom, and Barrow-born university student Miles, who plays his club cricket for Kendal CC, it would be the realisation of a boyhood dream.
“To be just one step away from playing at Lord’s is a massive incentive,” said 28-year-old all-rounder Dawson, who made his Cumberland debut 10 years ago. “It’s every cricketer’s dream to play at the home of cricket.
“That makes tomorrow’s semi-final the biggest game of my career. It’s a huge prize at stake, but we can’t look past the semi-final and the job we have to do there. Berkshire are a very strong side, so we will have to be at the top of our game.”
After qualifying through the group stages, Cumberland beat Shropshire in the last-16 and Herefordshire in a quarter-final thriller. Berkshire, however, pose the biggest threat yet.
“They are probably the best side in Minor Counties Cricket,” said Cumberland team manager Ian Sharp.
“They have former England spinner Shaun Udal, as well as other ex-Hampshire players. Millom lad and former Cumberland batsman David Barnes will also be playing for them.
“We will be the underdogs but we go there full of confidence, with great team spirit, and believing in ourselves.
“It’s Cumberland’s biggest one-day game for more than a decade.”
The last time Cumberland made the Lord’s final (the competition was then known as the ECB 38-County Cup) was in 1999 when they were beaten by eight wickets against Bedfordshire, although Simon Dutton’s men did make up for that disappointment by being crowned Minor Counties champs later that summer.
A decade earlier in 1989, Cumberland won the trophy at Lord’s when defeating Hertfordshire by nine wickets.
Berkshire have also won the competition once in their history, in 2004. They were losing finalists three years ago.
Selectors have kept faith in the young side, skippered by former Durham batsman Gary Pratt, that beat Herefordshire in the last round.
