Humane society implements changes

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. - Public outcry has forced a local humane society to make some changes. 

Local 6 first brought you this story months ago, involving the Humane Society in McCracken County. A number of people complained the animals weren't being cared for properly and there weren't enough opportunities to adopt.

Now, Director Shirley Grimes says the center is open on Saturdays from 9a.m. to 12p.m. with the hope of finding homes for the animals.

Marian Housholder lost her dog three weeks ago so on Saturday she came to look for a new one.

"(The new times) made it easier for me to come by here," Housholder "We're just out here on Saturday morning and it's just easier to swing by here then during the week."

She wasn't the only one stopping by to take a look at the animals. Maggie Hamper and Joe Cunningham, along with Joe's granddaughter Madison, also signed the guest book before browsing.

"We only have (our granddaughter) occasionally on a Saturday," Hamper said.

McCracken County Humane Society Manager Delena Hall says she doesn't mind working on the weekends.

"If that helps the animals get adopted that is great," Hall said.

And she hopes the new times attract people even if it's to visit.

"Oh yes, that's wonderful that's what we encourage people to do," Hall added.

Director Debbie Grimes also addressed complaints by critics about what the organization does with more than a million dollars it received from wills and estates. Grimes said that money pays to run the shelter and can't be spent frivolously. She says talks are ongoing about expanding the current location.
