Celebrating Canada Day coast to coast with music, celebrities
The nation's capital will be home to most of the star-studded Canada Day festivities. From noon to late evening, musicians, dancers and politicians take to stages across Ottawa to ring in the country's birthday. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Will and Kate, will make an appearance today on Parliament during their first overseas trip as a married couple. Toronto will be busy with many events across the city. Mel Lastman Square in North York will feature fireworks and the nine-member strong King Sunshine Band. Harbourfront Centre celebrates Canada Day with a packed slate of activities for kids and adults, including Hip-Hop Karaoke and Luke Doucet staging free shows in the evening. The fit Immanuel Lutheran College Year 12 student never dreamt ballet, tap or jazz practice would be part of his homework, but he gave the performing arts a try in Year 8 and has not looked back.
Josh will be among the first group of Immanuel dance students to graduate later this year.
As the only male dancer in his graduating class, he certainly embraced the advice Queensland Ballet Company ballerina Tamara Hanton gave when she visited the school last week.
Ballet is a lot more difficult than the other genres. It’s really technical and physical and everything needs to be perfect, Josh said.
Tamara trained at the Dianne McLellan Dance Academy and then at the Anne Fraser School of Dance on the Coast before she was accepted at the Queensland Ballet’s professional year program in 2006 and became a full- time member in 2009.
For some students, like Emma Kerr, putting on a pair of ballet slippers was nothing new.
She has danced for 12 years outside of school, and had dreams of being a ballerina when she was a little girl after watching her mother dance gracefully.
I think ballet is my vourite style. It’s what I do most of the time, she said.
Dance at Immanuel was introduced as an OP eligible subject last year.
