Where do I begin?
The first week is almost over, it was a difficult start. Gay stalkers (dont ask), dead batteries and puking dogs. The real task, though, was getting a grip on daily life. Would it work? But I need to speak about what happened before that.
Preface.
I do a PhD at the moment and am in the finishing stages. That means work, work, work (yes, Ivan). All work and no play kills you, though, and when I arrived here on Tenerife, I started surfing and fell in love with it. Gives me the relaxation I need. Full of endorphines, you see only the positives and working the next day is cojonudo Hence, I began to catch the bus everyday and it took some two and a half hours return. In the beginning, it was not so much of a problem, but when the workload inevitably rose, I was kind of stuck, no time for surfing all of a sudden! A car had to be aquired. This is kind of ridiculous, though, when you are living of savings already, trying to make ends meet with less than 300€ a month including rent and bills. At least, this is possible here, for the living costs are dirt cheap, but a car on top of that? No way. As it happens, we quit our flat end of Juli. Makes one think. Where do I go? another flat? Ideally to the beach, my social life is kind of non-existent at the moment anyway (too tired after the office), why not maximize the outcome of my time here? The gears started turning in my head. A few months left, if I find me a car for less than three months rent, give and take a little, and that car allows me to sleep inside, it could finance itself through the saved rent! “Crazy idea.” That’s what I mainly heard from other people. And they are right, most dont even know what it means to be at the end of a PhD-project, how much time and effort this consumes. But there were a few that said right away: “Do that! You know you want it.” I was committed. Of course, this would demand discipline. The discipline of going to the office everyday. I didnt think that this would be a prob though, because my work is actually a lot of fun at the moment. To see the thing grow and take shape makes you a bit proud. Well, it’s science, which makes it meaningless for the majority of people, but within my field, I think I can contribute something meaningful. The aim then was: get myself a car and arrange everything so I could comfortably live on the beach while not compromising my work. Outcome: more work, more surf, same living costs and I am laughing!
