Sheep dogs ride herd at Scottish games

— The grazing sheep could have been on a green rolling hill in Scotland Sunday instead of at Brengle Terrace Park in Vista. Didn’t matter at all to Mia.

The border collie got down low, ears back, and waited. This is what she had been bred and trained to do. On command from her handler, Michael Burks, she took off, racing up the left side of the hill toward the livestock.

Time for a little competitive herding.

Sheep dog trials, which date to the 1870s, were a popular feature over the weekend at the 38th San Diego Scottish Highland Games, the annual celebration of bagpipes, kilts, caber-tossing and meat pies. Dozens of handlers from throughout Southern California brought collies and an Australian kelpie or two to vie for ribbons and cash.

Some, like Burks, have been at this for years. He lives in Garden Grove and takes two dogs, Mia and Sport, to events throughout the West. Later this summer, they’ll be competing for the national championship in Carbondale, Colo.

“I just love the hobby,” said Burks, “but there are so many variables, it’s very humbling. You can finish first one day and last the next.”

Gail Hromadko knows. On Saturday, her collie, Sarah, finished second in the pro-novice, or intermediate, class. Sunday, the sheep got the best of Sarah, sprinting down the hill and off the course before she could outflank them.

“Some days you’re the windshield,” event announcer Joe Williams told the crowd, “and some days you’re the bug.”

Unlike Burks, who got infatuated with the sport after seeing a demonstration at a county fair, Hromadko came to it mostly out of frustration. She had a kelpie that was destroying things around the house. A friend said it was canine anxiety — the dog needed something to do.

Hromadko had the kelpie “instinct tested” and learned that herding might be the ticket. Ten years later, she enjoys it so much she has sheep at her place in Morongo Valley so her dogs can train there.

Turns out that’s fairly common — people starting out with dogs and winding up with sheep, too. It can be an expensive hobby.

But it’s worth it, Burks said. “It can be 30 degrees out and raining, but one look at the dogs’ faces, how eager they are, and you’re ‘All right, let’s do this.’ ”

“This” is a kind of obstacle course, with the dogs — directed by voice and whistle commands from the handler — steering the sheep down the hill, around a cone, through wooden gates and into a chain-link pen. In the open category, for the most-skilled teams, the dogs also have to cull two sheep from the herd. All in roughly 6 to 8 minutes, depending on the class.
