Sally Scalera: Learn about gardening through classes
July is here, and so is the heat.
Luckily, we've started getting some rain, too. If you have a lot of grass, you may be feeling like a slave to your lawn mower, but just in case you have the time and desire to do some other projects, here are a few ideas.
I will be holding a number of classes this month at our Cocoa and Palm Bay offices to help you grow food. In Cocoa, I will be teaching how to grow your own fruit from 2 to 3 p.m. July 21, how to grow vegetables from 10 to 11 a.m. July 27 and how to grow herbs from 2 to 3 p.m. July 27.
Down at our Palm Bay office, I will be teaching how to grow fruit from 2 to 3 p.m. July 14, how to grow vegetables from 10 to 11 a.m. July 19 and how to grow herbs from 2 to 3 p.m. July 19.
Each class costs $5, and to register you can go to our website at brevard.ifas.ufl.
edu. In the upper right-hand corner is a link for class registration. Click on the date of the class to be able to sign up. Offices are at 3695 Lake Drive, Cocoa, 321-633-1702; and 1455 Treeland Blvd. Palm Bay, 321-952-4536.
If you really want to learn how to grow vegetables, have your own 20-by-20-foot plot through our be healthy, "Grow Your Own: Vegetable Gardening in Florida" class. It starts Sept. 10. The classes will be at noon Saturdays in Cocoa. To find out more go to our website and look for more information under hot topics.
If you don't already have a rain gauge in your yard, buy one today. Then you will know exactly how much rain your yard gets from each rainstorm. If you get an inch or more, turn off your irrigation system so it doesn't come on for the next day or two.
Let the clippings fall when you mow. This returns nutrients and organic matter back to the soil.
Until we get out of the drought, continue to spray your St. Augustine grass that is in full sun with liquid seaweed weekly or every other week. If you would like my bulletin about liquid seaweed, you can either email me at sasc@ufl.edu or call 321-633-1702 and give us your address.
Do not prune azaleas, gardenias or camellias anymore this year. The flower buds are forming now, so if you prune, you will be removing the flowers that would bloom next year.
Continue to prune out any diseased or dead wood from trees and shrubs.
Flowers for full sun locations include wax begonia, coleus, amaranthus, gaillardia, marigolds, coreopsis, lisianthus, portulaca, salvia, comos, gomphrena, melampodium, torenia, coreopsis and zinnia.

Late autumn, early winter is the perfect time to plant garlic in Melbourne (Australia). These photos are from our container garden last year’s crop. I also planted some garlic in our community veggie patch, a bit later, so if one batch fails, there is a back up. Luckily, both crops succeeded and we still have our garlic.
The photo above was taken on May 20th 2010. The garlic was planted at the beginning of May and you can see the progress below. This year’s crop is already planted, but it’s not too late to plant your garlic as I read that winter solstice (21st June in southern hemisphere) is a good time to plant garlic here in Melbourne and expect the harvest on the longest day (summer solstice).
Garlic is a slow maturing crop, but one worthwhile planting. It will take about 5-8 months till maturity however, it doesn’t require a lot of space or care. This pot (about 30cm in diameter) had 18 bulbs of garlic. In the veggie patch, I planted it around the edges so it’s not in the way when the winter crop gives way to summer varieties.
