Watermelon focus of Field Day

A summertime treat sure to show up on most picnic tables this Fourth of July is South Carolina watermelon - juicy, sweet slices of perfection.

According to the New World Encyclopedia, American humorist Mark Twain, in one of his novels, had a character colorfully refer to the watermelon as "chief of this world's luxuries, king by the grace of God over all the fruits of the earth. When one has tasted it, he knows what the angels eat. It was not a Southern watermelon that Eve took; we know it because she repented."

Watermelon can be grown in all counties in the state. However, according to the South Carolina Watermelon Association, commercial production is centered in counties in the Lowcountry and in the Sandhills region of the Upstate. Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Colleton and Hampton counties are the leading production counties in the Lowcountry. Chesterfield County leads production in the Upstate.

Many varieties of both seeded and seedless watermelons are grown commercially in the state, and they are available in a variety of colors. Red flesh is the most common, but yellow- and orange-fleshed melons are also grown.

With the harvest season for watermelons currently under way in the Palmetto State, Clemson Extension Service and the National and South Carolina Watermelon Associations took the opportunity to promote the healthy fruit at the June 24 Charleston RiverDogs' doubleheader at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park.

Participating in the promotion was Holly Whatley, the 2011 South Carolina Watermelon Queen, who greeted RiverDogs fans and handed out free slices of locally grown watermelon.

Whatley, a 23-year-old native of Travelers Rest and recent graduate of Presbyterian College, was crowned South Carolina Watermelon Queen in January. She didn't skip a beat when asked about her duties.

"I promote the health benefits of watermelon combined with a healthy lifestyle," said Whatley, who played basketball at PC. "I represent the South Carolina Watermelon Association in a paid position, educating the public about how nutritious watermelon is and the many ways you can enjoy it.
