The Yavapai Humane Society is discontinuing animal shelter services to Chino Valley starting today. Humane Society officials note the decision was made by the Town’s Police Department, which oversees animal control. The reason for not renewing the contract was communicated by Police Chief Patricia Huntsman, who has indicated the Town can provide these services for less money. According to Humane Society Executive Director Ed Boks, the Society regrets this decision, as it has made tremendous strides in reducing pet euthanasia in that community. While managing the Chino Valley Shelter on Palomino Road, the killing of homeless pets was reduced by 67 percent and the live release rate was increased to 87 percent. These services will continue in Prescott, as earlier this month City Council approved a new agreement that starts today and runs through June 30th of 2013.
Yavapai Exceptional Industries opened the doors of its new site. Representatives note 2 years ago when the non-profit organization celebrated its 35th anniversary, the program began looking for ways to find more space for staff members, with an eye on the fact some of those employees are being transported daily from Chino Valley and Paulden. YEI’s suite of production facilities is located at the Prescott Airpark near the airport. Many local contractors helped get the new Ruger Airpark Industries Plant up and running and currently the industries woodworking operation has moved in. This leaves more space at the Antelope Point Industries Plant in Prescott Valley.
An 83 year old Cornville resident has been cited for reckless burning. On Wednesday morning around 11, Yavapai County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reckless fire near Central and Southern Drives. Deputies learned neighbors had used garden hoses to help contain the fire and personnel from the Verde Valley Fire District were able to extinguish the blaze quickly. Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dwight D’Evelyn explains the fire started at a residence in the 11000 block of Ridge Road:

Later that afternoon, deputies responded to the Canyon Creek Ranch area of Black Canyon City regarding a brush fire.
A ranch hand told deputies an unidentified male was using a cutting torch on some metal pieces when nearby brush caught fire. The fire burned about half an acre and 3 horses were evacuated due to the fire threat. D’Evelyn indicates Sheriff’s Office and Fire personnel are in the process of identifying the man who had used the cutting torch.
