Fireworks show tonight
The county will not hold a big July Fourth celebration at Jackson Park this year due to budget cuts, and the park will be closed to the public. A fireworks display will still be held at sundown, however, likely beginning around 9:30 p.m., depending on cloud cover.
The launch site for tonight's show remains in Jackson Park, but viewing will not be possible within the park. Spectators are advised to use open stretches of Hendersonville, such as downtown and along Spartanburg Highway on the south side of town.
“There will be many, many more viewing spots on that side of town than there ever were in Jackson Park (where crowds previously gathered to see the display),” said Tim Hopkin, director of the county's Parks and Recreation Department. “It's a far better viewing, in my opinion.”
Hopkin added that he's grateful there will be anything at all to see this year. The event was scheduled to be canceled because of county budget constraints until sponsors Pepsi ($7,000) and Morris Broadband ($3,000) donated money to foot the $10,000 bill.
“It wouldn't have happened without either one of them stepping forward,” Hopkin said.
ModificationsThe event now has a new look. In the past, spectators gathered at Jackson Park to view the fireworks being shot off from an area around the soccer fields.
But the cost of providing the other entertainment and law enforcement security typically found at the park for the annual celebration would have added $10,000 to $20,000 more to the cost. And there's currently road construction inside the park.
So the launch site has been moved to a higher-elevation location near the off-leash dog park and BMX track — on the opposite side of the park from where it used to be — to provide optimal viewing for spectators in certain areas around town.
The new site, which prevents viewing from inside Jackson Park because of the park's topography, also complies with safety regulations that require the site to be within a 1,200-foot diameter circle free of people, Hopkin explained.
A map with the launch site and potential viewing areas is available on the county's website, www.hendersoncountync.org . A large balloon will be tethered at 400 feet above the launch site Sunday morning, and if you can see the balloon, you will be able to see the fireworks, which will explode at 400 to 600 feet in the air.
A sparkling eventThe fireworks display will last about 20 minutes with nonstop action, Hopkin said.

Flat feet are a condition where the arch of the foot appears flattened. This causes the foot to roll inwards in order to gain friend with the floor and support the weight of the body, and is the main clinical figure of excessive pronation. The condition is most commonly a congenital condition but it can also be bought as a result of the foot being repetitively subjected to hard surfaces ultimately weakening the arch of the foot. In today’s world of concrete and tarmac it is therefore not surprising that this condition is becoming more and more normal in people of all age groups.
