Fairgoers indulge in favorite treats
RIPLEY, W.Va.-- More than 160 artisans and craftsmen have set up shop at the Cedar Lakes Conference Center for the 48th annual the Mountain State Art and Craft Fair here.
But there's a lot more to entice the senses.
Particularly, the food.
Just like many other festivals opening up around the July 4th weekend, there are booths and tents set up here ready to fill the empty stomachs of fairgoers with their favorite summertime staples.
Be it Philly cheese steaks, funnel cakes, ice-cold sugar-infused lemonade, and even deep-fried candy bars, there's plenty to please the palate.
Carole Brown was hoping to be the first to tease the taste buds. She had a prime spot at this year's fair.
Brown has been roasting up kettle corn at the event for the past 17 years. Her booth is located just to the left of the main entrance to the festival.
That means most fairgoers are greeted with the sweet smell of kettle corn from the moment they buy a ticket.
A retired doctor of internal medicine from Washington, D.C., Brown got started in fair confections as an excuse to get out of the hustle and bustle every now and then.
"It was just a way to get away for the weekend," she said.
She retired from medicine 10 years ago and moved to Daytona Beach, Fla. But she still likes to come back to the Mountain State each year for the festival.
"We like this area," Brown said. "We like the people here and we just keep coming back."
Why kettle corn?
A few decades back, she had a boyfriend who sold it on weekends on the fair circuit.
"I couldn't believe the lines of people," she said. "So I bought into it and he made the machine for me."
And now the lines belong to her.
Jackson County Commissioner Tommy Nutter strolled into the entrance and immediately got caught in the odiferous spell of the kettle corn booth.
"This is good stuff," he said, chomping down on the spoils of a freshly popped bag of kettle concoction.
Being a local politician, Nutter has attended what seems to be a never-ending list of fairs, festivals and local events to meet and greet voters.
He said he doesn't have a favorite festival treat, but rather takes a pick-and-choose approach.
"You've got to sample it," he said.
For Nitro residents Norman and Mary Jo Williams, sampling wasn't their thing. For them, it's all about the funnel cake.
