Fear smolders over fake pot
ALBANY -- When a package is labeled with the words "Not for Human Consumption," one might expect consumers to steer clear of smoking it.
However, with certain "herbal blend" products -- better known as synthetic marijuana -- that is not happening.
So-called fake pot, marketed as potpourri or incense, is being sold in the Capital Region in spite of a federal ban passed in March to eliminate the sale of similar products because of health hazards.
Those familiar with the phony weed say it simply has undergone chemical changes and still gets sold in corner stores and head shops -- perfectly legally under the letter of the law.
"It's a huge industry," said a young woman working behind the counter of a downtown Albany business in Center Square, who asked that the store not be identified.
More than a dozen brands of the product -- including "Spike," "Space," "Super Kush," "Green Kobra," "Demon," "Dojah" and " Cloud 9 " -- were on display in the shop when the Times Union arrived Wednesday.
The cost of the synthetic herb ranged from a small "Willow Pillow" for $10 to bags of "Sweet Lucy," being sold for $24.99 for one gram, or $36.81 for a two-gram package.
The cashier said the faux cannabis is popular with college students, but also those who freely admit they are on parole.
Health experts say the synthetic herb is just another vehicle to get high -- and not without risk.
Heather Long, the director of medical toxicology at Albany Medical Center Hospital , said the hospital's emergency room has treated a rising number of patients with racing heartbeats or vomiting from using the synthetic herb, which she said also causes hallucinations.
"Just because something is legal doesn't mean it can't harm you," said Long, who noted the Upstate Poison Control Center has also received an increase in calls because of the synthetic drugs. "People describe it as having more side effects than marijuana ... it's happening here, nationwide and Europe."
The concerned mother of a 17-year-old Albany teenager told the Times Union her daughter and her friends were smoking the fake pot regularly.
"This is right here, so prevalent, and destroying some of these kids," said the mother, who did not want her name published. "Unlike pot, it makes them lose their appetite, become unruly, edgy and agitated, and we don't even know what is in the stuff. The kids think it's all natural and safe. Being teens, they don't believe anything their parents tell them.
