DVD Review: Seconds Apart
Review By: Annie RiordanI’ve always been fascinated by twins. Not triplets or sextuplets or the issue which poured forth from the Duggar Vaginal Clown Car, just twins. Not sure why. Maybe being a bipolar Pisces has something to do with it. Duality is my nature, and there exists within me two very different creatures, which is why I must never ever skip a dose of Zoloft. You may think that the public face I allow you to see is a right raving bitch, but consider yourself lucky I’ve never shown you the other me. She’s like lights-out-in-a-mirror-maze-on-acid scary.
Seth and Jonah Trimble – played by real life identical twins Edmund and Gary Entin – are both creepier than Pedobear in a preschool. Their bond is tight, their parents are rich and the Catholic high school they attend requires them to dress in austere parochial uniforms that make them look like the head boys of Slytherin House. Void of emotion and sharing a powerful telepathic link, the twins are obsessed by the visceral reactions of fear they can inspire in others. With camcorder in hand, they seek out their schoolmates and anyone else who annoys them, driving them to deliberate acts of self destruction and hoping to catch fear incarnate on film. Experiment after experiment leaves them wanting and drives them to increasingly sadistic acts of violence, until the Russian Roulette style “suicide” of several school jocks attracts the attention of Detective Lampkin.
Lampkin suspects that the twins harbor powers beyond comprehension, but he can’t prove it. And it’s not like anyone is going to believe him anyway, considering his traumatic past and fragile mental state. Besides, the twins have an eerie ability to alter and/or wipe the memories of anyone who gets too nosy, so gathering up any concrete evidence against them is damn near impossible.
However, emotion finally does find its way to Jonah, the “weaker” twin, who suffers not only from acute diabetes but who also cringes in his sibling’s shadow. However, instead of fear, he finds love in the form of new girl Eve, a perky, ambitious little slut who makes no secret of the fact that she’d like to doff her plaid skirt and knee socks and give Jonah the best bang since the Big One. Irked by this intrusion, Seth tries to put an end to the affair, but his grip on Jonah is loosening as both Eve and Lampkin drive a wedge between the brothers. Seth will have to resort to more drastic measures if he wants to stay in control.
